High Power Systems

High Power Systems are the requirement of today due fast depleting raw materials required to generate energy and demand increasing at a very fast rate for the Electrical Power. Electric Power Trade rates also vary during the various time periods in a day. Wide rate fluctuation is due to demand fluctuation during various time intervals in a day. Power Generated by Solar Panels and Wind Generators is also fluctuating in nature. Power to the Grid becomes fluctuating if not stored and stabilized. Grid may become unstable under varying load and varying generation capacities.

Wind Generated Power is rectified filtered and fed into high power Lithium Ion batteries capable of storing very large power. Large Scale Photovoltaic cell arrays also generate dc power which is also fed to batteries during sunlight and this power is fed to the Grid during high loading and redrawn in the night during light load on the grid. Revenue reconciliation is done and thus solar panel company gets much cheaper power all the time and saves almost 50 to 80% on their billing and under light load and over generation conditions the consumer can actually make money from the utility company.

Co-Generation is the only solution for growing power requirements of the society and no single administration can handle peak load and off peak load effectively without distributed power generation. The use of biomass for power generation has been growing over the past 20 years due to the increasing demands for limiting the greenhouse gas emission (CO ). For small boilers, up to a fuel input of 150 MW, the use of the grate firing technique is available. The grate firing requires less fuel preparation than, e.g. pulverized fuel firing, thus the fuel handling and preparation equipment is substantial reduced compared to burner application.

India needs to invest close to $2,000 billion in the power sector (including T&D) in the coming few decades to meet our future electricity needs.
Our future generation mix would thus consist of numerous decentralized renewable sources and low carbon sources such as wind, solar, biofuel, nuclear, hydro and even geo-thermal, tidal and ocean thermal, in addition to the usual suspects – coal and gas.
The installed generation capacity has grown from 1,362 MW in 1947 to 144,564 MW as on 31.05.2008. The overall gross generation was 704.45 billion units in 2007-08. The Plant Load Factor (PLF) from thermal power plants has reached 79.49% in 2007-08. Despite such growth, the peak electricity supply fell short by 16.6% and there was an overall shortage of 9.9% in supply during 2007-08.
Per capita consumption of electricity is still about 704 kWh per annum – much lower than the world average of approximately 2,500 kWh and even China’s 1,800 kWh. Various initiatives, such as Ultra Mega Power Projects (UMPP), to facilitate setting up of new power plants through government and private participation. There are plans to add about 78,700 MW of generation capacity during the 11th Five Year Plan (2007-12) from various sources including coal, gas, hydro, nuclear and renewable.
Plans are underway for integrated national power grid in the country by 2012 to carry 60% of the power. The existing inter-regional power transfer capacity is only 17,000 MW and is to be enhanced to 37,000 MW by 2012 through the creation of Transmission Super Highways.
