Analysis Technology for Gene Functions with Cell Arrays

Next-generation technology for drug treatment target discovery depends on the elucidation of intracellular signaling networks, which should be modeled from large-scale molecular and cellular response data. Cell-based array technologies are being used for highly parallel real-time monitoring of cellular and molecular response functions to clarify signaling networks by using various human cells. Marine biotechnology is about the discovery and development of marine resources (like marine organisms) into a wide range of new products, e.g. food, food additives, healthcare, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and medical applications. These organisms have been in the spotlight owing to their unique features, which part them from the rest of the terrestrial biodiversity. These organisms have been found to possess characteristics like alkalinity tolerance, thermo tolerance, baro tolerance and the ability to use unusual molecules. These attributes make marine organisms a useful resource for use in different industries, bioremediation and agriculture. Marine biotechnology is gearing up globally too. About 10,000 compounds are known from marine sources. Already many compounds are in the final testing stage for antiviral, anticancer, antihypertensive and anti parkinsonian activity. Many industrial enzymes could be obtained from marine organisms. In fact they can be much superior compared to those from terrestrial source. Vibrio alginolyticus, a marine bacterium produces a detergent resistant protease that can find application in detergent industries. What is interesting is since the bacterium lives in high salt concentration, the enzyme will act in low water activity situation such as those encountered in industries where organic solvents are used. For the same reason many halophilic bacteria can work better in bioremediation and effluent treatment.

Proteins work together to form networks. By knowing the specific networks of the proteins related to various diseases,it will be possible to elucidate the development mechanism of diseases such as cancer and other lifestyle-related diseases and identify new drug discovery targets.
Drug candidates can be narrowed down through analysis of the interaction between target proteins by making maximum use of extensive full-length cDNA resources and protein interaction analysis.  Such physiologically active substances can then serve as drug development platforms after a detailed examination of bioactivities, including morphological change, cell death and gene expression patterns at the cell or whole organism level, and a toxicity evaluation using cardiomyocyte cells differentiated from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs).

Proteins, including protein complexes, considered to be important for industry-related post-genome research such as drug discovery and other uses. The targets of the development are antigen production technology that can systematically create antibodies having a high specificity, technology to enhance antigen presentation and avoid immunological tolerance, and technology to efficiently separate and purify antibodies.

 Biotechnology in Agriculture Biotechnology has also revolutionized research activities in the area of agriculture which includes the following:
(i)plant cell, tissue and organ Culture
(ii)genetic engineering leading to transformation followed by regeneration of plants to give transgenic plants carrying desirable, traits like disease resistance, insect resistance and herbicide resistance; eventually this may also be used for increasing photosynthetic efficiency, nitrogen fixing ability, improved storage proteins, hybrid crops, crops for food processing etc.
(iii) somatic hybrids between sexually incompatible species, Permitting transfer of desirable traits from wild or unrelated crop species to ,our crop plants
(iv) transgenic animals produced in mice, pigs, goats, chicken, cows, etc; it is suggested that some of these will eventually be used as bioreactors to produce drugs through their milk, blood or urine this area has sometimes been described as molecular farming.

At the same time, development of related technologies, including devices to enable efficient measurement and evaluation of various characteristics of cells to be used, is needed.
