Air Beds Mattresses
Special chemicals in the brain, called neurotransmitters, control the physical
act of sleep. These nerve-signaling chemicals regulate different groups of cells—or
neurons—throughout the brain, deciding when we’re going to be awake or asleep. You
can think of neurons like microscopic light switches. When you’re ready to fall
asleep, they “turn off” the signals that keep you awake.
We can be awakened easily as we drift in and out of stage 1 sleep. Our eyes move
very slowly, and our muscle activity decreases. Stage 2 sleep puts a halt to eye
movement and slows down our brain’s activity a great deal. However, sudden bursts
of quickening brain waves called sleep spindles may occur. During stage 3, extremely
slow brain waves called delta waves appear, combined with short, faster ones. By
the time a person reaches stage 4 sleep, they experience the slowest brain activity
of all stages. Stages 3 and 4 combine to form “deep sleep.” The eyes are completely
still, as is any sign of muscle activity. It’s difficult to wake someone from deep
sleep. The last stage of the cycle is REM sleep. It usually occurs 70 to 90 minutes
after we fall asleep. Breathing becomes rapid, shallow, and often irregular. Our
eyes move rapidly in a variety of directions. Muscles become temporary paralyzed.
Our heart rate increases, as does our blood pressure. This is the stage where dreams
occur. And thanks to research, we have a much better idea of how our brains and bodies
function as we drift off to dreamland. By also understanding external factors that
affect sleep—like diet, exercise, and mattress quality—scientists and product manufacturers
are developing ways to make sleep a more productive, restorative activity in the
future.
Manually Inflated Closely related to the air mattress a pad of this type requires
an external pressure source to inflate, typically in the form of a pump or by blowing
orally. Convection of the air inside the mattress reduces the amount of insulation
it provides and more complicated mattresses include methods to reduce this by either
partitioning the internal cavities, or by filling the cavities with material to
trap the air such as down feathers or synthetic insulation. Self Inflating An extension
on the conventional manually inflated mattress this type is capable of self-inflation
due to the open-cell foam that fills the internal cavity. For many years this design
was protected by various patents held by Cascade Designs and they were an
unusual and premium item. But since these patents expired many other manufacturers
are now producing this type of mattress and they are now commonplace. Solid Types
Closed cell foam is used to produce simple mats that do not require any inflation.
These have the advantage of not being prone to punctures. Variations include textured
or shaped foam to increase the unrolled volume and/or change the stiffness of the
mattress. This can also be used to trap the air within ridges or an egg-carton type
of texture, as is the case in the Therm-a-Rest RidgeRest and Z-Lite, respectively.
